What is hypnosis?

Perhaps the simplest way to describe Hypnosis is as a pleasant suspension of awareness on a natural continuum somewhere between wide-awake and fast asleep (like daydreaming for example). Its main benefit is that it enhances the responsiveness of the subconscious mind to positive and helpful suggestions and gives access to subconscious resources.

There is no question of being controlled or manipulated and nobody can be made to do anything they do not want to do!

Does it work?

The Health Education Authority has said
"Research shows that there is more scientific evidence for Hypnotherapy than any other Complementary Therapy….by using hypnosis, people can perform prodigious feats of will-power and self-healing".

Why use self-hypnosis?

Self-Hypnosis is the ultimate self-help tool. It's safe, fast, simple, pleasant, effective, non-invasive and non-addictive. Nearly everyone can do it and it's stood the test of time - people have been doing it for thousands of years! Best of all, it encourages self-sufficiency because it empowers you to use your own resources to help yourself. Whatever your difficulty, self-hypnosis offers you the potential to be more resourceful, independent, self-confident and self-controlled.

If self-hypnosis is so great, why have mE-Notes?

Lots of reasons really. Here are some of them-

  • Different people like to learn in different ways. Relaxing and listening (as in the self-hypnosis audio MP3 downloads/CDs) works best for some people, usually those whose preference is for auditory or internal experiences. Others prefer a more proactive, analytical or visual method of learning, in which case mE-notes fit the bill. Most benefit is probably derived from a combination of both approaches.
  • Some techniques are just easier to follow when they are written down!
  • Whilst the audio MP3 downloads/CDs work by repetition, mE-notes provide iterative, sequential learning opportunities.
  • The audio MP3 downloads/CDs aim to create an environment where ideas, insights and information are self-generated. There is more scope with mE-notes to offer additional information and to draw on other people's experiences and expertise. The two approaches are complementary.
  • Both offer fantastic value because you can go back to them again and again. mE-notes are probably easier to reference but both (in different ways) offer an opportunity to reflect, re-evaluate and resolve problems.

You don't have a title that matches my problem exactly. Can you help?

Self-hypnosis by definition has to be a very personal experience. The art of creating a self-hypnosis CD that necessarily has the same words on it for everyone is to be what is known as 'artfully vague'. This means that the suggestions are crafted in such a way as to leave room for individual interpretation. It's often not necessary or even desirable to be too specific.

Some of my products (or combinations of them) are designed to help with a wide range of emotional, psychological and physiological issues and may meet your requirements. For example, improvements in self-confidence and self-esteem could have a profound impact on a variety of other difficulties such as performance and exam/driving test nerves, relationship issues, fear of flying/travel, stress management, weight control, smoking cessation, nail biting, panic attacks, insomnia, bereavement, lack of motivation etc.

Please email me so that I can assess your individual needs and offer a more personal response.

Whose voice is it on the recordings?

Its mine! So the voice is female with an English accent.

You will also hear gentle music as a lead-in and at the end of the recordings. I do not use any type of subliminal suggestion or confusion techniques involving multi-voices or multi-layering as there is currently no evidence to support their efficacy. All recordings are digitally mastered and you can be confident of their clarity and sound quality.

There are lots of self-help products available. Why should I buy yours?

It would be easy to tell you that you should buy them because they're the best! The truth is though, that neither you nor I can be certain of that. What you have to decide is not whether they are the best products - but whether they are the best products for you.

I suggest you use much the same criteria that you would use in selecting a therapist -

1. Check out experience, qualifications and professional memberships. You can find mine on the About Myself page.
2. Ask for recommendations from other people. You can read what other people have said about my products on my Testimonials page.
3. Make your final decision based on your gut feeling or instinct. Therapy is unlikely to work well unless you feel comfortable with the it/the therapist. The purpose of this website is to provide enough material for you to be able to make an informed decision.

When should I play the CD/download?

The optimum environment in which to play the CD/download would include anywhere quiet and safe and where you can feel free to enjoy being relaxed. Lots of people find that playing it in bed before they go to sleep can be a good time and the recording gives you the choice of either resuming your normal day-to-day consciousness or drifting off into a natural bedtime sleep.

To help you maximise your opportunities to benefit from the sessions, each track is recorded separately so that you can 'mix and match' according to the amount of time you have available. However, it's important that you do not play the CD/download when doing anything else that requires your full attention such as driving or operating potentially dangerous machinery.

Does it matter if I fall asleep?

Since hypnosis occurs somewhere on a natural continuum between wide-awake and fast asleep, it can sometimes be difficult to determine exactly when trance stops and sleep starts! Everyone's experience is different.

Don't worry if you feel that you fall asleep; you will still gain the benefits and will choose either to wake up or drift safely into even deeper levels of relaxation after the session has concluded.

Could I get 'stuck' in hypnosis?

No. You are no more likely to get stuck in hypnosis than you are to get stuck in a book! Nobody has ever remained in hypnosis indefinitely.

People who ask this question are usually thinking about something they have seen or heard about stage hypnosis. In stage hypnosis shows, hypnosis is used primarily as a vehicle for entertainment: Helpmyselfhypnosis products use hypnosis as a self-help tool for fast and effective change. The two approaches are very different.

What if I get disturbed?

Whilst its best if you can find some time when you're not likely to be disturbed, you will always be in control and able to respond appropriately to any interruption.

How often should I listen to my self-hypnosis session?

If possible, I suggest you play the entire CD/download every day for the first 7 - 14 days. Think of it like knocking a nail into a piece of wood - the more often you hit it, the quicker it gets in there!

After this initial period, continue listening 3 or 4 times a week for at least another couple of weeks but now you can save time if you wish by interspersing your personally edited version with the full version.

You can't 'overdose' on hypnosis! In fact people often enjoy it so much, they continue with the sessions from time to time long after their problem has been resolved.

Are hypnotherapy and hypnosis suitable for everyone?

Hypnosis is contra-indicated for people who suffer from any type of psychotic personality disorder or psychosis. This is because these medical conditions cause an altered state of mind whereby it may be difficult to distinguish between what is real and what is imagined. If this could apply to you, please seek advice from your doctor, psychiatrist or medical advisor.

The jury is still out regarding the suitability of hypnosis for people who have a history of fits although hypnosis in itself is highly unlikely to precipitate a fit. If you have any concerns, please check with your doctor or medical advisor.
