Self Hypnosis

Here you will find notes about hypnotherapy, self-hypnosis and my self-hypnosis audio CDs/MP3 downloads

Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

The Health Education Authority has said:

"Research shows that there is more scientific evidence for Hypnotherapy than any other Complementary Therapy….by using hypnosis, people can perform prodigious feats of will-power and self-healing".

Perhaps the simplest way to describe Hypnosis is as a pleasant suspension of awareness somewhere on a natural continuum between wide-awake and fast asleep (like daydreaming for example). Biofeedback demonstrates that during hypnosis the left, analytical side of the brain becomes less active whilst the right, imaginative and emotional side becomes more active. The metabolism, breathing and heartbeat slow down and the brain patterns change from mainly beta to alpha and theta waves. Everyone's experience is subjective of course but common characteristics are a state of deep relaxation and heightened awareness, at one with a feeling of calm lethargy.

Hypnotherapy as the name implies, involves the application of hypnosis as a therapeutic tool. Its main therapeutic benefit is that it enhances the responsiveness of the subconscious mind to positive and helpful suggestions and gives access to subconscious resources.

Self-hypnosis

It could be argued that all hypnosis is in fact self-hypnosis. It is not something that is imposed upon you by someone else; it's an internal focus of attention generated by your response to suggestion. The most effective suggestions work not by polluting your system with someone else's idea of what should (or should not!) happen but by empowering you to use your own resources to help yourself.

In an environment where we can often feel pressured to try harder and harder, one of the great attractions of self-hypnosis is that it works almost by absence of effort. In fact, a bit like getting to sleep - the harder you try; the harder it is!

All you have to do is:

Stop.
Be still.
Close your eyes.
Breathe.

Help Myself Hypnosis - making the most of subconscious resources

Help Myself Hypnosis takes advantage of two particular characteristics of the sub-conscious mind -

    1. Its creative ability to find solutions to problems.
The audio MP3 downloads/CDs make use of techniques such as therapeutic metaphors, embedded commands, double binds, truisms and other hypnotic language patterns to create an environment where ideas, insights, information and solutions are self-generated - literally 'help myself self-hypnosis'! The art of creating a self-hypnosis CD that necessarily has the same words on it for everyone is to be what is known as 'artfully vague'. This means that the suggestions are crafted in such a way as to leave room for individual interpretation. It's often not necessary or even desirable to be too specific.

    2. Its willingness to accept positive and helpful suggestions without the restrictions ordinarily imposed upon conscious abilities and responses.

The effect of this is then compounded because:

Positive suggestions
breed positive actions,
which bring positive success.

This type of suggestion works best by repetition - hence the need to listen to the hypnosis session on a regular basis at first. If you think something often enough, you will begin to believe it. That belief will then become a self-fulfilling prophecy because:

    • A positive belief will build a more positive attitude that in turn leads to more positive expectations.
    • This expectation means that you will start noticing when you behave differently and more positively and so you start to notice the small improvements.
    • The positive cycle continues because as you notice these improvements, so more positive beliefs will grow.

Help Myself Hypnosis - for the time challenged!

I appreciate that however much you want to make changes in your life, finding enough time to commit to the process can be difficult. Even the exceptionally well motivated and well intentioned can still be time challenged!

I've designed my CDs so that you can tailor them according to the amount of time you have available without compromising the positive benefits. As you become more familiar with the process, you respond more quickly and so it becomes possible to reduce the time spent without any reduction in the end result.

Help Myself Hypnosis still follows the conventional tried-and-tested structural elements of an hypnotic intervention, which are:

    • Induction
    • Deepener
    • Therapy Carrier
    • Reorientation

but to help you maximise your opportunities to benefit from the sessions, each track within each section is recorded separately. Generally speaking, this means that as long as you play some tracks from each section, you can 'mix and match' according to your personal preferences and the amount of time you are able to invest. You'll find full instructions for each individual CD by clicking on its title on the left and instructions for use below.

Help Myself Hypnosis - CD/MP3 Instructions

I recommend you use these simple guidelines to achieve maximum positive benefit.

Step One - Choose a time and place

Stop. Get off the world for a while. Choose somewhere quiet and safe where you can feel free to indulge in complete relaxation. Lots of people find resting in bed before they go to sleep can be a good time and the recording gives you the choice of either resuming your normal day-to-day consciousness or drifting off into a natural bedtime sleep.

If you would prefer to enjoy your hypnosis session whilst sitting, choose any straight-backed chair high enough to support your back and shoulder. Be sure that your feet are flat on the floor and that your arms are resting, untensed on the arms of the chair or in your lap. Its better to avoid crossing your arms or legs because as you become more relaxed you may find yourself acutely aware of your body and the weight of your limbs supporting each other could be disturbing. (Also crossing arms and legs tends to limit good circulation)

Step Two - Listen, relax and enjoy!

Be still. Close your eyes. Breathe. This is your time - just relax and enjoy it. As you listen to my voice, let yourself to drift with the words as you hear them but there's no need to bother to pay too much attention. Remember, it's the absence of effort that does the trick!

Step Three - Repeat Steps One and Two

If possible, I suggest you play the entire CD/download every day for the first 7 - 14 days. Think of it like knocking a nail into a piece of wood - the more often you hit it, the quicker it gets in there!

After this initial period, continue listening 3 or 4 times a week for at least another couple of weeks but now you can save time if you wish by interspersing your personally edited version with the full version.

Don't forget to contact me if you have any questions or feedback.
